The Assassination Conspiracy of Abraham LincolnPresident Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He was president during the hardest time of our country. He was a stabilizing force during a time when the country was consumed with instability. The instability became even more pronounced on April 15, 1865, when Lincoln was assassinated. The assassination was the result of a conspiracy by a group who were afraid of a potential Lincoln dynasty. John Wilkes Booth, Michael O' Laughlin, Sam Arnold, George A. Atzerodt, David Herold, and John Surralt were the original conspirators behind Lincoln's assassination (Bishop 7, 78). Then, John Wilkes Booth enlisted the final member of the conspirators, Lewis Paine. In a way, this man was the best because he could be relied upon to kill on order (Bishop 77, 78). Paine was big, strong, silent, and stupid. He had thick jet hair, a clean handsome face, and the muscles of a strong man (Bishop 78). They had made many attempts to assassinate the president and failed. John Wilkes Booth became frustrated and had one final thought. Booth found out that Abraham Lincoln would be attending a play at Ford's Theatre.Booth arrived at Ford's Theatre at about 0 p.m. (http//home.att.net/~rjnorton/Lincoln75.html). He came down the dress circle steps slowly. Booth looked down at the little white door that President Lincoln was in and realized he would have no problem getting in. He walked down to the white door, and stood with his back to it. Now was the time, and John Wilkes Booth knew that. A tiny beam of yellow light squeezed through the gimlet hole in the door and made a dot on the opposite wall. The conspirator crouched and pressed his eye against the gimlet hole. What he saw was clear. The high back of the horsehair rocker was in plain view and the silhouette of a head above it. The derringer was now in his hand. He turned the knob and the door swung inward. President Lincoln, facing diagonally away toward the left, was four feet from him. Booth put the gun behind Abraham Lincoln's head, between the left ear and the spine. Booth squeezed the trigger and there was a sound as though someone had blown up and broken a heavy paper bag (Bishop 0). The bullet had entered through Lincoln's left ear and lodged behind his right eye. Nine hours later at 7 a.m. on April 15, Abraham Lincoln died.John Wilkes Booth was shot and captured while hiding in a barn near Bowling Green, Virginia, and died later the same day, April 6, 1865. The other conspirators were hanged at the gallows of the Old Penitentiary, on the site of present-day Fort McNair, on July 7, 1865 (http//lcweb.loc.gov/ammem/alhtml/alrintr.html).All these people and events helped shape our nation's history. The tragic loss of one of our nation's greatest presidents will always remain in America's heritage. No matter how many assassinations or different presidents, President Lincoln's death will still be remembered in all the years of presidencies.
