People's most influential learning and growth experiences come from the unexpected and unwanted events in life. Nowhere is this more evident than in the story "Cathedral." The narrator is forced to host his wife's long time friend a blind man. Through this unwanted visit, the blind man Robert develops a relationship with the narrator and helps him realize that life is about continuous learning often from the most unexpected of places and people. The character development of the narrator evokes images of a man who hates his work, a racist, where drinking is "one of [their] pastimes (Wolff 114)" and smoking cannabis is such a routine he does not think twice about offering it to a stranger. He wallows in his self-absorbed isolation unable to progress and develop a life for his own. He married someone else's high school sweetheart and there is no mention of his name. With his lack of personality however, it is not necessary for it to be revealed. In the first sentence of the story, the narrator reveals his ignorance and prejudice by introducing Robert to the reader as "the blind man." Instead of seeing a person and a man, he saw a disability walking into his home. The narrator's "idea of blindness came from the movies (108)" which was to say that people with out vision are incapable of leading a normal life. He perceives this opportunity to meet an influential person in his wife's life as a burden and is instantly standoffish. This however is slowly changed through the narrator's observations that Roberts's actions are only slightly different than a man with vision.Robert, a man who lacks eyesight but perceives reality clearer than most, is able to teach the narrator about himself and change his carefree uninvolved life. He is able to open the narrator's eyes not only to the vast abilities while being blind, but also the possibilities of the world around him. Even though the narrator never fully opens up to him, internally the narrator begins to see Robert's abilities go beyond "[moving] slowly" and being "led by seeing-eye dogs (108)." The first glimpse of Robert's abilities that he respects is during dinner when he "watched with admiration as [Robert] used his knife and fork on the meat (115)." He also refers to Robert as a jack-of-all-trades and he is impressed with the things Robert is able to do and has accomplished. After smoking cannabis with Robert, the narrator has become comfortable with him and Robert has started the process of opening the narrator's eyes to the world he is missing. The final scene of the novel truly allows the narrator to view life with a new set of eyes. While attempting to assist Robert with understanding the intricacies of a cathedral, he finally understands himself. Sharing the pencil, together they draw the cathedral on television. Drawing with his eyes closed upon the request of Robert, the narrator finally comes to terms with what a privileged life he leads. His ultimate change is revealed when he understands "My eyes were still closed. I was in my house. I knew that. But I didn't feel like I was inside anything (14)."
