He used old boxes as frames, and in the frame he attached several pulley-wheels with strings wrapped around them. He used an old phonograph handle and attached one end of the string to it, then attached some object at the other end of the string. By cranking the handle with his hand, he was able to turn the pulleys and make the object revolve. He was delighted in this object, yet no one at that time understood his interest thus creating the foundation for his future exploits in the world of kinetic art.

Lye played with the dynamics of movement using still and moving images and mechanical means like kinetic sculpture. By combining constant sound and rhythmic movement, realized through gently rotating circles or strips of metal (Grass), he fashioned kinetic sculptures that command attention.This is what intrigues me the most his kinetic sculptures his other works (photographs, animations) are good works in their own right but his kinetic sculptures are what i believe to be his best works.I am going to take up two of his works as example to showcase his work and talent.The first one is titled universe Universe is a long piece of sheet metal stretched around in a band of about two metres diameter. It is caused to move, presumably by electromagnets embedded in the plinth. The band rolls in mighty waves and wobbles, as if its own energy creates the surges, the one riding unpredictably on top of the other. The chaotic peaks of movement are registered in sonic explosions, as the heavy band strikes a hard ball, suspended directly above on an elastic cord. The clashing echoes through the band in further rhythms, producing an eerie metallic timbre like the sound of a protracted letter "r". I saw this work at the city gallery and i wanted to take it home. it was just that awesome As the sound echoed through the gallery space i realized just how thoughtful its title was and the sound was transporting me literally into deep space.Another work that deserves a mention is grass Grass is a plank with fine metal rods embedded perpendicularly to the surface in a gently swishing curve. The plank balances see-saw-like and slowly oscillates, causing the tensile filaments to sway together. But because each rod has a slightly different characteristic and receives a slightly different impulse from the hinging plank, they all move differently, collide, regroup and flux between harmony and disagreement. As the timer switches the system off, the silent diminishing of flurry in which the rods come to rest is majestic. Both works are more than monumental illustrations of the physics of movement. Theoretically, you could predict every movement, since the pulses produced by the machinery are identical each time the sculptures are detonated. But no two sequences are alike, for a chaotic genius enters which almost allegorises the ghost in the machine, the special element of opportunity, excitement and unique occasion that Lye probably understood by the eloquent term "zizz".
