Although many people were shocked by this lack of morality, this same basic moral decay occurred in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. In this novel his Characters break the laws, cheat on their partners, and treat other people like dirt.The characters in this novel show no respect for anyone else, because they are all egotistical. Jordan Baker shows this lack of respect for the well-being of others by living such a careless life and expecting all others to make up for her carelessness. She does this because she is so self-absorbed that she does not care about anyone else. This self absorbency is shown in her golf game as well, if the cheating accusations were true. Another example of this arrogance is displayed in the life of Jay Gatsby, who attempts to use people to learn more about his long lost love, Daisy. He and Meyer also did not care if their business associate Walter Chase got thrown in jail for "a month in New jersey", because as long as they got their way it was fine (141). As Gatsby was using other people, others were also using him. The one person who probably used Gatsby most of all was Klipspringer, This man lived off of Gatsby so long that he became known as "the boarder" and Nick even said that he "doubt[ed] if he had any other home"(67). Yet, this man did not show up at Gatsby funeral instead he went out to a picnic with some friends. This just implies that directly after Tom and Daisy's honeymoon that Tom had already begun cheating on her. Then Jordan continues to tell about how Tom had been in an accident with a chambermaid in the car with him. Tom is not only cheating on Daisy with chambermaids or other single woman, he also has affairs with married women. His relationship with Myrtle Wilson is one in which he is trying to court his high school crush. Continually he is getting phone calls from Myrtle even when he is sitting down with his family eating lunch. He buys her all kinds of gifts such as a puppy, furniture, and even her own apartment! All this time as Tom is out with his mistress his wife, Daisy, is having an affair, not just for sex, but for, what she calls, love. Daisy is constantly visiting Gatsby's mansion to have sex and continually feeding her desires. She does not care about her husband and she even kisses Gatsby as soon as Tom leaves the room. Gatsby is not innocent in all of this either though, he used his whealth to try to seduce Daisy. He wanted to gain all of this money just so he could win Daisy, a mother of a small child, away from her husband.. Gatsby's actions here were not on impulse alone because this affair had been planned out intricately, so that he could gain something from Daisy that he had experienced in the past with her. Fitzgerald shows that the characters contain no sexual morals whatsoever.

All and all Fitzgerald shows that no one in this book has any lawful decency.
