The phrase, "Life is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there," is used in the first and last two lines of Gluck's poem. This phrase is used often to describe a place someone would like to stay but can not. No one would use the phrase with the word "Life" as the location. I also think this poem is in a sarcastic tone because the speaker and everyone else who reads this poem knows that there is no other place to go. We are all stuck here in the real world and we should accept it, and dwell on the positive aspects instead of the negatives, and this is the point Gluck is trying to get across.Gluck uses word play in the poem to further her point. The speaker names some of the first-rate qualities that exist in "Life" in parentheses, in the middle of the phrase just to emphasize the greatness of life right now, after the word "place." The speaker mentions the four different seasons, music and pleasant noises, how the "Host," who I think is supposed to be God, arranges contests with prizes for the winner, which could mean the everyday trials and triumphs of "Life." The speaker also mentions how celebrities are easily found there, and Love is around in many different shapes and sizes. I find this sarcastic because it is like someone saying they do not want a car that has all these features for a cheap price. I think the speaker in the poem is making fun of a phrase that is often used to describe a pleasurable place, or a "paradise." For instance, I am guilty of using this phrase to describe Florida, a place where the sun always shines and the temperature is usually to everyone's liking, but the speaker does not list one or two trivial attributes like I would list when describing Florida, she lists many important everyday things we could not live with out.. I think the author may be trying to say that "Life" is really a paradise and we should appreciate what we have while we still have it.
