While examining the twelve vows taken by lay members of the Jain faith, I found quite a few to be similar to my own religious and moral principles and practices. The first five vows, touching upon selflessness, purity, honesty, and care for all life forms, coincide with my beliefs as a Catholic Christian as stated in the Ten Commandments and in Biblical teachings. My faith has taught me to be moral, to abstain from sex until marriage, and to constantly express love for others through selfless acts of kindness and justice. The next three vows that are appended to the Five Lesser Vows are similar to my church's teachings whereby they state that one is to refrain from overindulgence and unacceptable harmful behaviors such as incessant complaining. One of these three vows addresses excessive travel in the sense that Jain members should keep vacations to a minimum. This "vow" is not specifically stated in the Bible or Ten Commandments, yet I feel it is indirectly addressed when Catholics say one should not overindulge or be so entirely self-absorbed that they are blind to the needs of others. I feel this vow is beneficial in that one should not constantly try to escape reality in search of an artificially pleasing world, but instead find comfort and solace from family members and friends who are there as mentors and companions in the world. In addition, the four final vows touch upon fasting and giving alms to charity, both of which we practice to a great extent in the Catholic church. The other two vows state one should meditate while standing on a regular basis and also reserve one's activities for a specific place and time period. These two vows are not strictly abided by in my church, but clearly meditation is a beneficial practice used to purify one's mind and spirit, and also the act of constraining the amount of time one spends participating in activities may leave more time for prayer with God in today's busy environment. These Twelve Vows in the Jain religion parallel many of my own religious moral principles and practices that I follow in accordance with the Catholic church, in addition to dictating a variety of other life practices that aim to simplify one's life and nourish the spirit.
