The speech that I chose was the speech that President Bush delivered to the nation after the terrorists' attacks on September 11, 001. I think that reading a speech and hearing a speech are different because you don't get to see the emotion that is involved in delivering a speech, especially one like this. This was a very emotional day for Americans and you don't really get the full effect of it by just reading it. Maybe President Bush might have gotten choked up and started crying during the speech, or maybe he stood as strong as an ox, you can't tell though by just reading it. You can't see the facial expressions that were made during the speech. You also could not hear a tone of voice to maybe stress certain points about the speech. A speaker can really stress a point with the way something is said and you can't get that aspect of a speech by just reading it. There also weren't any interruptions during the speech. Sitting here at my house where it is peaceful and quiet would be a lot different than hearing this speech with a room full of people. I am sure that there would be quite a few tears shed during a speech like this, not to mention coughing, sneezing, etc.The type of organizational pattern used I think was a causal pattern. President Bush identified the problem, terrorists overtaking planes and causing them to crash into buildings to affect not only the lives of the victims and their families, but millions of Americans and others throughout the world. This led to President Bush implementing our government's emergency response plans. He said "The functions of the government continue without interruption." He also stated that "Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks." He then went on to say that the search is on for those who are responsible for these acts and we will be using the help of many world leaders. The terrorists' attacks caused all of these other things to happen.President Bush did relate it to the audience when he talks about our nation and our freedom. Everybody who lives in the U.S.A. is apart of our nation and everyone who lives in the U.S.A. has freedom. In the first paragraph he addresses the nation, which includes every member of the U.S.A., and says "These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed; our country is strong." That is addressing the nation as a whole, including you and me.I think the one thing that is interesting about the speech is the confidence that President Bush showed in out military to say, "America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time." He stated that when not knowing what the next day would bring, and the next 5 minutes for that factor. I think that he brought hope, confidence, and ease to the situation to a lot of people just through a simple speech saying that "Hey, this sucks but we are going to be o.k." I also thought that it was interesting how he addressed the Lord in his speech and asked the nation to pray that the terrorists would be "comforted by a power greater than any of us, spoken through the ages in Psalms ." I think those are some pretty powerful words coming from the leader of our nation. He is saying that we can't win this war on our own. He is saying that we need the help from the man above to do what he and only he can do. I also thought that this was kind of a short speech for such a big event in the world. I am sure that there could have been other topics that could have been discussed at this time and that needed to be discussed at this time.

I don't know that anyone could have any credibility to address an issue like this. I know that there have been terrorists' attacks before, but none like this. I guess the only reason he would have credibility is because he is head of our nation and armed forces and the nation looks to him in a time of need and he responded with a great speech.
