THE FISHING TRIPAfter a long drive from Caboolture in convoy with two other families, we arrived at the Gladstone dock in time to see the finishing yachts, in the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race enter the harbour. We all helped the 'deckies' Dave and Chris to load our gear onto the 'Curtis Ambassador' for a week of fishing and relaxing on the Great Barrier Reef.Ray, the Captain, told us that we weren't leaving until the high tide at midnight, so as Gladstone was alive with people from the yacht race we ventured over to the carnival and had some fun at the local show. After we came back to the boat we all settled down for an early night in preparation for the big adventure. At p.m. there was a disturbance coming from my sister's and her friend's cabin Lauren was seasick, and we hadn't even left the dock. This was going to be an interesting trip!

Early the next morning the engines were cut and we awoke to see the sun rising over Lady Musgrave Island. We all went snorkelling and discovered the magic and beauty of life amongst the reef. The men were very anxious to catch some big fish and had all the latest fishing gear to help them achieve this goal. Dave helped me to rig my line and taught me how to cast and how to feel for the fish biting. After a few false starts, known as terra firma, the line jerked and the fight to land my first reef fish was on. I managed to catch a beautiful coral trout and was very pleased with myself, but I was also a little sad that this beautiful creature was going to end up in the freezer along with all the other fish caught on the trip.Dave spent a lot of time with the children on the boat; he showed us how to snorkel properly, how to drive the dories, how to prepare the fish for cooking, how to identify the different fish that lived along the reef, what bait they all like and most importantly, how to catch the fish. We found that Dave had a genuine love of the reef and didn't really like catching the fish, but his job was a boat deckie and it was part of his job; to help the people catch fish. We moved around the reef each day, and by night anchored near one of the many coral islands. Some nights we were so far off the main land the only lights where that of the moon and stars. This was magical, Dave helped us to pick out the different constellations, which was difficult as there were so many brilliant stars in the sky. I began to love being on the water and watch the majestic beauty of each sunrise and sunset, to spend time swimming amongst the coral and fish and spending time with my family in a relaxed, stress free environment. All to soon the holiday saw over and the 'Curtis Ambassador' was back at the Gladstone dock. I had formed a great friendship with Dave and planned to keep in contact with him. After packing up the cars we all left for the long drive back to reality and our daily lives.Dave and I wrote to each other several times and I had plans to return for another fishing trip in the future. He was also a brilliant carpenter and was helping to build a new bigger boat, which was to be used in the future by Ray and his family for fishing trips. A couple of months after our trip, Ray rang to give us some tragic news, Dave had had a heart attack and had died at home. He was only 45 years old and had such a love of life and people. I felt angry and betrayed, how could this happen to someone who loved life so much? We had only spent one week with him, but he was like a brother to me, he taught me so much about the beauty of the reef and helped me to see the wonder and size of God's creation. Now when I see a beautiful sunrise or sunset I think of Dave and hope that he too is still witnessing the wonder and beauty of nature from his eternal resting place.I have changed my outlook on life and realise that life is precious. You need to look at the beauty in each day and the goodness in everyone who you come in contact with to achieve the most in life. You never know when your life will be over and there won't be any more chances to just stop and just give thanks for being alive.
