The poem had a nice rhythm that kept me interested. However, it was the last stanza that grabbed my attention and started to puzzle me. I believe the answer to my question depends on the perspective of the reader.If I read this poem from the perspective that Barbara truly loves this man, I can see how it can be interpreted as a great love poem. For example, in the last stanza when Barbara says "Since my love died for me today, I'll die for him tomorrow," it is plausible to think that Barbara Allen is serious and is heartbroken over the death of John Graeme. That Barbara rose slowly and left him slowly speaks to her feelings for him. If she didn't care, she wouldn't have lingered. From this perspective, it appears that Barbara's pride got in the way of telling John how she really felt about him before he died. It's the classic idea of "you never know what you've got until it's gone."If I read this poem from the perspective that Barbara doesn't love this man, I see an entirely different interpretation. The last stanza becomes cruel and mocking from this viewpoint. That she will die for him tomorrow rather than today says to me that she's not going to die for him at all. If she were that heartbroken that she would die for him, I would think that she'd want to die for him immediately. Also, from this viewpoint, to tell John that he's going to die is cruel. Another cruelty was to point out to him, on his deathbed, that he once slighted her. These are things that one would not do to someone they love or care about.All in all, this poem was a fascinating and enjoyable read. I particularly liked that the ending is left up to the reader's imagination. The answer to my question won't be found in the lines of this poem, but rather in the minds of the readers.
