Women in the MilitaryThe number of women that are in America's armed forces has been increasing in recent years. Since there has been an increase in the number of women in the military there has been pressure on the military officials to open more opportunities for women in the military. Some of the opportunities now available to women include combat aviation, engineer brigade companies, and intelligence jamming companies. However, do women really have a place or the qualifications necessary to be effective in the positions being available to them? Women have affected America's military but not necessarily in a good way. As a result of women's desire to be seen as equals in the military, there has been a double standard for physical requirements. There have also been negative effects and tension in the ranks of some units. In Lt. Berkley's article, she says that "just because men are stronger than women that are no means to cut them from a service to their country." However, it does not justify the lessening of physical requirements for women or support why they need to be in the military.Women have come a long way in how society perceives them and in the amount of respect that people shown toward them, but women should let men take care of fighting and defending the national security of America. The reason that women are limited as to what they can do in the military is because they are not capable of performing certain tasks properly. One of the tasks they are not able to do as effectively is dragging soldiers off of the battlefield. Another is meeting the same physical requirements as the men.Gonzalez

The physical requirements for women in the military have been discussed and argued over since women began joining the military. The fact is that women are not able to meet the physical requirements that are standard for men. As a result women want this standard lowered so that they can participate in different activities. Some of the activities women want to participate in include being on special operations teams and being combat pilots. Women aren't treated equally because they have their own standards which are completely different than what the real standards are. The purpose of a physical fitness test is to show not only your overall conditioning but also whether or not you meet the qualifications to do a specific job. The physical fitness test is important because it shows if after a period of time you are physically capable of doing your job in the military. Chief Tracy has been in the military for twenty years and when he was asked about the physical fitness test qualifications for women he said, "In the Navy we have to take a semi-annual physical fitness test. Women only have to do a fraction of the sit ups, push ups and run time to get the same 'Outstanding' score a man gets! How can they say they're just as qualified?!?" For example if a man has to do twelve pull-ups, a woman would only have to hang by her arms for a minute or thirty seconds.Women have no right to say that they are just as qualified as a man is if they do not have the same scoring system for their physical fitness test as men have. If a woman can take the physical fitness test, be scored on the men's scale, and score the necessary points to be qualified for a special operations team; then by all means more power to her. If the standard has to be lowered for her to make the qualifications for a particular field, Gonzalez then she has no right to be in that field because she could end up putting her entire team at risk.Another result of women wanting to be viewed as equals in the military is that there has been a negative effect on several units. A unit is group of individuals who have been trained in a particular field to perform a certain job. An example would be a SEAL team which has been trained to defuse bombs. The three ways that women have affected a unit is in a unit's readiness, morale and cohesion. The readiness of a unit has been affected because the unit can not train like they need to, can not maintain the necessary operation tempo, and can not maintain the proper leadership of the unit. The training that some units do can not be done by women. Command Sgt. Maj. Lyle Otineru is in charge of training the 1st Armored Division. Sgt. Maj. Otineru was performing a rescue exercise and the women in his unit were not able to execute the exercise. The Sgt. Maj. said in his article that, "The women were troubled by how difficult this basic task proved." This point illustrates that women can not do the necessary training that is required for certain fields. The morale of a unit is sometimes all that a unit has to get by on. If a unit loses its morale then it has no desire to complete its mission which will result in the capture and or death of that unit. When a unit has only men then there are not as many occasions for that unit to lose their morale. If the unit has women, then there are many different causes for lower morale levels. Last year when I was stationed in Newport, my unit was mainly guys. When we didn't have any women in our unit we won awards for everything we did. When the first female was assigned to our unit, she began to ruin my unit's reputation Gonzalez 4immediately. She did this by having improper relations with men in different units, by complaining about what was required of her, and by not performing the task required of her. An example of this is when we had a training exercise; she would find an excuse to not complete the exercise which meant that her responsibilities had to be distributed among the rest of the unit. As a result my entire unit lost its morale and we were no longer able to function properly and accomplish the missions we had. Leadership is also jeopardized. The leader is no longer able to make the necessary plans or missions to accomplish the objective. Instead of doing what the leader knows to be right he has to take into consideration whether or not the women in his unit are able to do everything that men can do and as a result the leader sends his unit on a mission that he knows will not be a success because not everyone on the unit can perform the mission.Another important reason why women do not need to be in certain fields is because tension is increased in the ranks. Women expect to be treated equally and when they are treated equally in the ranks they feel that they are being mistreated or that people expect more from them than from the men. There is also tension in the ranks resulting from women because they want all of the same opportunities for advancement that men have even when they are not qualified for the advancement. In his article, "Women in the Army", Lt. Col. Robert Carrington says, "You would expect to see mid-grade officers and NCOs in key, career-enhancing positions like operations, intelligence and command. Until women are valued partners in the Army's first team, they will be institutionally discriminated against and have less opportunity." What the colonel means by this quote Gonzalez 5is those women will not have the same opportunities for advancement that men have until they prove that they deserve to have those same opportunities.I think it's great that women are getting more respect than they have in the past, but I think that there are certain things that women should leave alone and the military is one of them. Women in the military have a double standard on requirements for physical fitness test scores, women have negative affects on units, and have increased the tension in the ranks. Our military can use women for nurses and other such positions, but when it comes to sending women over seas to protect our national security and our freedom; I would feel a lot better sending men who know what they are doing and who have done that sort of work before. Our military has been very successful without women in combat situations and our military will continue to be successful without women in combat situations. 1446 wds.
