In the short story, "Two Kind,?by Amy Tan, it described the traits between a mother and a daughter. "Three days after watching The Ed Sullivan Show, my [Jing-Mei] mother told me [Jing-Mei] what my schedule would be for piano lessons and piano practice?Tan 181). All these pressures lead to Jing-Mei's rebellion against her mother. Another factor that contributed to Jing-Mei's rebellion was that she would never seem to satisfy her mother's expectations. The first set of disappointments to her mother was the continuous tests that her mother gave to Jing-Mei, such as "Multiplying numbers in my [Jing-Mei] head, finding the queen of hearts in a deck of cards, trying to stand on my [Jing-Mei] head without using my [Jing-Mei] hands, predicting the daily temperatures in Los Angeles, New York, and London?Tan 180). The next failure was when she had to "look at a page from the Bible for three Minutes and then report everything…"(Tan 180). Jing-Mei was devastated by "seeing my [Jing-Mei] mother's disappointed face once again, something inside of me began to die?Tan 180). "My [Jing-Mei] mother's expression was what devastated me [Jing-Mei] a quiet, blank look that said she [mother] had lost everything. However, there was more "disappointment my mother felt in me [Jing-Mei]. In the years that followed, I [Jing-Mei] failed her so many times, each time asserting my own will, my right to fall short of expectations. I didn't get straight A's. I didn't become class president. I didn't get into Stanford. I [Jing-Mei] dropped out of college?Tan 185). These disappointments led her to decide, "I [jing-Mei] didn't have to do what my mother said anymore?Tan 184). The last reason why Jing-Mei decided not to try to succeed as a prodigy in her life was that she hated herself because she hated failing. Jing-Mei hated herself so much that she "looked in the mirror above the bathroom sink and when I [jing-Mei] saw only my face staring back ?and that it would always be this ordinary face ?I [Jing-Mei] began to cry. Such a sad, ugly girl! I [Jing-Mei] made high-pitched noises like a crazed animal, trying to scratch out the face in the mirror?Tan 180). Since, Jing-Mei hated to fail, she decided to cheat her way through, and deprive herself, to achieve high goals. She shows this when she explains, "maybe I [Jing-Mei] never really gave myself a fair chance. I [Jing-Mei] was so determined not to try, not to be anybody different that I learned to play only the most earsplitting preludes, the discordant hymns?Tan 18). These are a few points in why Jing-Mei never thought of herself as much and decided to stop trying in her life. Amy Tan writes about a character that went though different changes in life. As you can see, these changes led to lower expectations or maybe none at all. The pressures that were caused by her mother led to negative changes in her and only made her angry with her mother and herself.
