Change is both positive and negative and it is a process of transition from one state to another. The impact it can have on us varies because we can change in a variety of different ways as we encounter different people, situations and experiences in life. Change is always occurring and it can be for better or make people worse. However change is more positive than negative. I will study change in characters through a variety of different texts including a play called Away, and two poems called The Door and Suburban Sonnet. In Away change is noticed dramatically in two female characters whose names are Gwen and Coral. Both characters have different reasons for needing change and in the end both Gwen and Coral transform in to better people through emotional growth found in interactions with their environment and other people. In Away the character of Gwen is presented to us as a snobby woman who's early experiences with poverty have brought about a materialism in her, as she is under the illusion that these material possessions will protect her and her family from further poverty. As a result of this materialism Gwen has been distracted from her family emotionally and has turned into a hypercritical nagging woman. Gow uses Gwen's habit of taking a "Bex" every time she encounters conflict to show her emotional barrenness. Gwen's change is brought about through a storm from which all of her possessions are destroyed and she is no longer able to hide behind them. She is now left with nothing, which is exactly what she fears in life. The final event that brings about change in Gwen is the information she receives from Vic that her son Tom is dying from cancer. This information creates new perceptions in her for what is important in life such as family and the natural environment. The news of Tom's imminent death also restores to her an emotional and compassionate depth that had been missing.

Gow uses a variety of different ways to show a change in Gwen. After the storm she becomes inarticulate which is a direct contrast from her critical ways of the past. Gwen also resorts to another "Bex" but this time she is unable to take it. It is from this that we are able to see a permanent change in her because she is rejecting the old habits and ways of her old life. The final developmental stage in Gwen's change is seen at the theatre where at the end of "the stranger on the shore" play Gwen applauds thunderously where earlier in the play she was critical of the first performance "A mid summer nights dream" and was unable to engage imaginatively with the play at all.Coral is another character that undergoes self-change. She is emotionally damaged and trapped in unresolved grief for her son who died in the Vietnam War. Gow uses clichand empty repetition in Corals language when she is talking to her husband to show how introspective she is. It shows how Coral has hidden herself from the outside world and how she is unable to communicate with it in anyway. Coral blames her husband Roy for the death of their son and Roys lack of compassion and his frustration with his wife makes the tension worse. Corals isolation is seen through a useless conversation with a woman called Leonie who she ends up frightening. Corals neediness is seen through a relationship she forms with a young man named Rick who closely resembles her dead son. Change for coral is brought about through her interaction with Tom in the "Stranger on the shore play". Coral meets tom after running away from her husband who threatened to have her committed. Gow uses a play within a play device to dramatise Corals emotional stagnation and what has happened to Coral. Through the mermaid who must confront her own fears and return to her own world Coral is able to experience an emotional catharsis and to return metaphorically to her own world and to mental health. This is presented to us when Coral says "I'm walking I'm walking" first in her characters voice then in her own voice. The final process of self-change for Coral is the offering of seashells to her husband and his acceptance of them.In Away change for both characters is seen as a positive one where both Gwen and Coral are able to live as more fully rounded human beings.
