If Atticus wasnt at least a smart man people including Walter would not respect him for defending Tom even if they dont agree with the trial.But to every good person their is a nemisiss. Atticuss nemisiss is Ernist Ewell. His daughter is the one who says that Tom beat her. This is what the trial is based on. Mr. Ewell does not like the fact that Atticuss is defending a negro. He even says this to Atticusss face You shouldnt be defending that n. Another good action Atticuss shows is that he always encourages his kids to be themselves. This shows real character, and that he is more of a man than someone who hides behind insaults and mockery. He also gives very wise advise to his children, like one time he told scout You can never really know anyone inless you clime into their skin and see what they see. This comes after Scouts first day at school, where she and a little disagreement with the teacher, and ends up getting in a fight with one of the school boys. After hearing this Scout realizes that what Atticuss says is true and doesnt have any more trouble. He also explains why he is defending Tom, to Jem and Scout.
