There are two main medicinal practices in the world The practice of Western medicine, and the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In this project, I will be talking about, and then comparing, both the pros, and the cons of both Western Medicine, and Chinese herbal medicine (CMH). Originating in China over 5,000 years ago, Chinese Herbal Medicine, even now, provides almost half of the medical treatment in China and has become increasingly popular amongst Western countries. It is now a respected form of healing all around the world.CHM focuses on doing two things. The first, is bringing the body to a balance using the 'Yin' and 'Yang' theory. This theory states, that Yin and Yang are both forces in the universe (Yin being the negative force, Yang being the positive force), present in all of nature, in animals, and in human beings, balancing each other out, resulting in inner harmony. A disease or illness occurs, when this balance fails, and Yin and Yang do not correct themselves. Everything has a Yin and Yang aspect - For instance, look at the table. It shows The Yin and Yang aspects of different things

Yin and Yang are used in the mix of the medicine. The five elements, are associated with certain organs, and certain plants'/herbs' tastes. The right mix of herbs, should cure the problem. This table shows the link between the elements, their relevant organ and taste characteristics. The second thing CHM focuses on, is Qi. Illness is caused when the channels of the body have been rendered irregular, and the Qi (energy) has been blocked To get better, the body channels (which carry energy around the body ) must be regulated again, so as to unblock the stoppage of Qi. According to the rules of CHM, both balance of Yin and Yang , and the body channels must be balanced and regulated in order to keep healthy. The prescribed medicine in CHM, is most effective when in liquid form, such as a herbal drink (tang) or a herbal tea (cha). Medicine could also be in the form of a powder (shan), a syrup (kao or wan), or a pill. One problem faced when giving chinese herbal medicines in a liquid form, is the appalling taste. CHM can help treat internal problems (e.g. asthma bronchitis, flu, migraines, diabetes, high blood pressure), dermatologic problems (e.g. acne, eczema, psoriasis), ears, nose and throat problems (e.g. earaches, hay fever, sore throat), muscular-skeletal and neurological problems (e.g. arthritis, sprains, stroke, neuralgia), genito-uriary and reproductive problems (e.g. infertility, bedwetting, pelvic inflammatory disease), mental-emotional problems (e.g. anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia), and general problems and addictions (e.g. alcoholism, drug addiction, weight loss). What it can't treats, is things like fractures and brain damage; problems that require an operation.Chinese Herbal Medicine has several historical books, which are very important, and are read by all students of TCM and CHM. These contain herbal formulas written down thousands of years ago.The earliest herbal formulas found were written down in the rd century B.C.E, and the main book of the theory of Chinese medicine, was compiled in the 1st century C.E, and was called The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic. It is still taught in schools today. One book, called The Imperial Grace Formulary contains 16,84 entries, many of which are still used today. Chinese Herbal Medicine is effective in treating quite a lot of problems (see above), however, it doesnt work for everyone. Some herbs are poisonous, and illegal to use, so it's important to make sure you go to a registered practitioner if you want a herbal remedy. Drugs such as arsenic and mercury could be used (in minute quantities o course) but apart from that, Chinese Herbal Remedies are safe. Something that attracts a lot of people to CHM, is the fact that you are putting natural plants and herbs into your body, as opposed to chemicals. A big difference between Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese Herbal Medicine, and Western medicine, is that CHM and TCM haven't changed much over the 5,000+ years of its existence. It is based on theories and principles developed a long time ago, and they are still basically the same. Western medicine, however, has changed a tremendous amount. Medicinal methods and techniques change and improve very quickly. Western Medicine focuses on research; finding new cures, develop older ones, and exploring the cause for the disease in the first place, contrary to CHM and TCM, which keeps to its theories, principles and rules. In ancient times, medicine was extremely primitive. People used reasoning and observations to advance their knowledge of medicine and anatomy, rarely experimenting, therefore often making mistakes in their theories. Some experiments were done, to see how the body worked, but there were no microscopes, so only what could be seen with the naked eye was seen.Little research happened in the Middle Ages, as religious beliefs kept old ideas from being questioned. There were religious laws that kept human bodies being dissected, and animal research During the Renaissance, interest in science grew. As this interest grew, old beliefs were being challenged, and mistakes were found in the writings of Galen and Aristotle. The study of anatomy was improved, and more people believed that advances could only be gained through experimentation. The cause of the pulse was also discovered.During the 1600s, scientists became very curious about how the human body worked. They would study animals, and compare their findings to people. This laid a foundation for future scientists to build and expand on. Microscopes were also used to learn about cells. In the 1700s, a the process of respiration was studied by a French chemist, who found that the body burned oxygen, and produced carbon dioxide and water. His work led to the discovery of metabolism. The 1th century was when scientists began to realise the limits of their knowledge. The use of animal models became perfectly acceptable in scientific research. Scientists began to think about how the brain worked, the function of the spinal nerve, how diseases spread, and the role of white blood cells. It was also proved that animals could be immunised from the rabies virus. From then on, huge advances in Western medicine were being made very quickly. The 0th century brought antibiotics, sophisticated surgical techniques, transplants, anaesthetic, and a lot more.Western medicine is very efficient and safe, although there are some drugs which have horrible side effects (such as thalidomide, which lead to many deformed children in the 60s). Western medicine has been constantly advancing and improving for hundreds and hundreds of years, through observations and experimentation. Chinese Traditional and Herbal Medicine, however, has been basically the same for 5,000 years, keeping its basic principles and rules. I wouldn't trust CHM or TCM with a serious problem, because unlike Western medicine, it is not based on any facts, and can't save lives. I am not convinced that all illnesses can be treated by balancing Yin and Yang and regulating the channels of the body. BIBLIOGRAPHYRay Porter The Greatest Benefit to MankindC.
