Essay #For/Against Gun ControlHave you ever wondered how gun control could affect our life and lives around the world? United States' first major gun law was the Gun Control Act of 168. The 168 Gun Control Act (ATF - The Gun Control Act of 168, Public Law 0-618) established categories of prohibited purchasers and possessors including convicted felons, fugitives from justice, minors, individuals with a history of mental illness, anyone dishonorably discharged from the military and illegal aliens. The law also banned the mail-order sales of all firearms and ammunition, such as the rifle used by Lee Harvey Oswald to shoot President John F. Kennedy. (The Lee Harvey Oswald Research Page-Index) The law also set standards for gun dealers and age guidelines for gun purchasers and prohibited the sale and manufacture of new fully automatic civilian machine guns. When this law passed on gun control, it received a wide range of responses. Since this first law, those increased measures to limit access to guns feel that to do so would limit criminal access to guns, thereby reducing violent crime. Opponents of gun control refute this claim. Their reasoning is that making guns less available or harder to obtain will, in the end, only hurt the law-abiding citizen. To have a profound knowledge about gun control we need to analyze the pros and cons of this issue. Stronger gun laws would help law enforcement solve gun crimes and help prevent gun violence. I think that a few issues that directly affect Americans are crime and especially gun violence. Whether they are urban, suburban or rural, younger or older, male or female, crime and the fear of crime shapes peoples daily lives, from where they want to live to how late they stay out at night. Concern with crime and concern for its victims is neither a partisan nor an ideological issue. Progressives should be leaders in the fight against crime. Its victims are disproportionately the most vulnerable the old, the poor, the young, and minorities in inner cities. Effective programs to make the streets and parks safe for people, and make the schools safe for children are vital to any vibrant society. For example, when the Washington Metro Area Sniper Shooting (Alan Ross) occurred the streets and parks and even near schools were not a safe place for people to be, because no one knew where the sniper would hit next. That's why stronger gun laws would help law enforcement because if they would have stronger gun laws that shootings like this one would not occur as much.

Those people who are against gun control believe that the right to keep and bear arms goes far beyond the Second Amendment (Second Amendment) it is plain good sense. Britain, which was hailed by gun control supporters as some sort of new utopia, is suffering from a crazed crime wave. Gun crime is up and even the police need to arm themselves now for self-protection. The International Crime Victims Survey, (Ben Hopkins) done each year in the Netherlands, determined that England is the most violent western country in the world. Australia, (ICVS) another gun ban country, is a close second. Some people think that states in our country which have shall-issue laws, where decent, law-abiding citizens can legally carry a firearm for self-protection, have significantly lower crime than states with restrictive firearm laws. (The 18 FBI Crime Statistics). For example, the most heinous mass murders in this country were perpetrated without the use of a single firearm. For instance the case of Timothy McVeigh and the events from /11. (Lee Merritt). Indeed, had the pilots on /11 been armed, it is highly likely that most or all of the horror would have been averted. Many young people die from firearms everyday. This includes any person under 1 who engages in criminal activity. Many of these young career criminals are killed when they attempt armed robbery and come up against an armed storeowner who is trained in firearms and self-protection. Many others are gang-bangers who would kill each other even if there were no firearms. In fact, less than one child a day dies from accidental firearm discharge. I think to own a gun presents a higher risk for homicide and gun accidents in households. There are many accidents that happen everyday in households about someone being shot or accidentally shot him or her. Handguns should be illegal because studies have shown that they are forty-three times more likely to be used against your own family than a criminal is. (Times Myth) That is why police official advise for anyone who keeps a gun at home to keep the gun and the bullets in a separate metal box and securely locked. Than is a rule than everyone, who own a firearm must agree to. Some people do not follow this rule and they just leave their firearms lying around the house. That is one of the major causes of why many young people and other people get in accidents with guns, because they do not know how to use it and they just start to play with them. Everyone has to remember that a firearm is a very dangerous thing to mess with. Personally, I am against gun control. There many people who have a different opinion about this topic, but I have had experiences and lead me to stand against gun control. For example, when I moved to America four years ago, I used to live in Detroit. As I started to live in Detroit, I have found out that it is not too pleasant. I remember that you could hear a gun shot at least one a night between approximately midnight and three a.m. I even remember that in my third month here in the United States of America, I lived in Detroit there was a man shot in my neighborhood. After like five minutes police, ambulance and even the fire trucks came and I just thought that, I was not a safe place to live. And may be it could happen and happen all over again because Detroit is a very violent city and people really do have to be careful. The police had told everyone in the neighborhood that the people who convicted the shooting may be still hiding out in this neighborhood. That scared all the neighbors and me because we did not know where the criminal would be. Everyday I was very worried because I did not know if the police had already caught the criminal or not. Therefore, I had to make sure that I got home before it was dark outside. In addition, my family was coming in a month, so I decided that I would have to move to a safer city to be able to make a comfortable and safe living arrangement for my family and myself. Than I decided to move to Novi. These are the reasons why I am against gun control. People want to be able to protect their family and they could do a better job at it, if the government makes stricter laws about gun control.
