I (name) take (name) as my wedded wife/ husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part. Those are the vows taken in a marriage and should be respected. Unfortunately that is not the case in real life. Many stories reflect the everyday problems faced by the society when it comes to marriage. Three stories that I've read talk about one common theme marriage. The three stories see marriage differently but mostly for one reason or another, directly or indirectly, they are against it or have negative thoughts concerning it. Margery Kempe's "The Book of Margery Kempe", Gregory Corso's "Marriage", and Jeanette Winterson's "The Green Man" all have marriage as their theme. Margery Kempe examines the fundamental conflicts and tensions of the married life by describing her gradual movements away from worldly prestige. Margerys separation from conservative female roles and duties and therefore had to suffer many consequences. The main one was having an unconventional marriage for the rest of her life. Margery Kempe has been through almost every unusual situation. For example, she claims to have seen Jesus sitting on the side of her bed dressed in a purple mantle. Women had no direct relation of any kind with God; it was the men's job to see to that. It is mainly because of what Jesus told Margery to do that her life by some means transformed. Jesus demanded two things in order for Margery Kempe to be guaranteed a place in heaven; fasting every Friday and to prevent any sexual relationship with her husband. Margery Kempe decided to accept this offer and informed her husband about it. After having many disputes, Margery Kempe and her husband finally reached a settlement where he was not allowed to have sex with her but in return he was assured a place in heaven and also she would pay off all his debts. This is one of the many places where it is obvious that the husband does not sacrifice for his wife unless he gets paid in return. Although there seems to be not many conflicts between this couple, their marital life was rather strange. The husband was strongly encouraging his wife to recluse where all the different people considered strange stayed isolated from the society in order not to disturb others. (QUOTE). It is also important to keep in mind that she got married at the age of twenty. Had it not been because of the society's pressure, Margery Kempe might have never even chosen to become a housewife. This is why marriage does not seem appealing to the reader as he/ she reads this story.
