For the first few chapters, Jay is portrayed as a mysterious lonely millionaire who throws wild and lavish parties for strangers. As the book goes on we learn more about Gatsby and his supposed past. When Nick asks Gatsby about his past, Gatsby quickly says that is personal, and he changes topics. Later he says that he was at one time in the drug business, and later in the oil business. But he was not associated with them at that time. We finally learn about Gatsby's real past. He is Born Jimmy Gatz, and his parents were poor farmers from the Midwest. In his later years, he becomes involved with a wealthy girl named Daisy, but they could not wed because they were of different social classes. Also, he meets a wealthy yacht owner named Dan Cody. He is rich, and happy, and Gatsby comes to the conclusion that he should some day be just like Dan Cody. If he was just like Mr. Cody, he could have anything he ever wanted, and he could have the girl of his dreams. Wealth from now on is a necessity to Jimmy. He decides that from that day on that he will someday become a millionaire and fulfill his dreams of being happy. He then adopts his new millionaire name, Jay Gatsby. Mr Gatsby went off to war, and while he was gone, Daisy married a man by the name of Tom Buchanan. This does not derail Gatsby's dreams of one day being rich and married to Daisy. He acquires a vast fortune illegally through bootlegging alcohol. He is reluctant to tell this to anyone, in an attempt to keep a clean respectable image. Ultimately Gatsby earned all of his money through lying and doing underhanded deeds. It was all acquired illegally and most likely at the cost of other people's well being. Nick has expressed on several occasions that he does not enjoy the company of those who are involved with underhanded things and he does not approve of lying or hurting others. He dosent like Gatsby's materialism or his ways of getting what he wants. Gatsby has done all of these things, which is how he represents everything that nick has unaffected scorn for.
