My mother raised us to help participate in making decisions that involved us and things that we did. My Uncle and Aunt separated when my youngest cousin was just a small child, so he would get his two sons on weekends and most of the summer. For me that was not enough and I would question him further often ending up in a shouting match which of course never solved anything. My family would spend the summer on Assateague Island and it was during one of these summers that my Uncle made me realize who I am and the kind of person the world perceives me as. One evening my cousins, brothers and I were out on the beach looking for ghost crabs. After returning to the campsite my Uncle confronted his sons with a missing flashlight. My cousins told him that they had taken it but had returned it and didn't know its whereabouts. As usual my Uncle didn't believe them but instead of his usual tactic of questioning them relentlessly he turned to me and made the statement that he would ask me because he knew I always told the truth. That single statement was a turning point, not only in my life but also in our relationship. I have always been an honest person but until that day I didn't realize the importance of it. In our household we were always told the truth so it came natural for us to do the same. Somewhere during the many arguments my Uncle had gained respect for me and I realized then that I wanted to stay an honest, truthful person. From that time on I never again argued with my Uncle. Even though we still disagreed on many things, I would be the first to walk away. It made me realize that arguing never solved the problem.
